The sender was a certain „Tom“, who was supposedly also 15 years old and had many common interests, from music to video games. His messages were friendly, and although they had no mutual friends, Marie thought she might have met someone who really understood what it meant to be a teenager in this digital world.
Chapter 3: Confidential conversations
Over time, Marie entrusted Tom with more personal information. It seemed harmless to tell someone who seemed so much like an old friend about her favorite ice cream parlor, her school location, and even the upcoming family vacation. She didn’t know that Tom didn’t even exist. Behind the profile was a social engineering criminal who systematically collected information from Marie to use it for identity theft and possibly even more dangerous activities.
Chapter 4: Waking up
Reality came in waves when Marie came home one evening to find that her house had been burgled. Valuables had disappeared, but what was even more worrying was that personal photos and her diary had also been stolen. The police suspected that the burglar had precise information about their address, the family’s presence and even the location of the hidden spare keys. It turned out that „Tom“ had spent weeks trying to elicit information from Marie through seemingly harmless conversations. He had abused her trust and used her online friendliness against her.
Chapter 5: Lessons and new beginnings
The incident was a wake-up call for Marie and her family. They now understand that not all online interactions are innocent and that sharing too much information can have dangerous consequences. Marie began to focus intensively on cyber security and data protection. She learned to protect her digital footprints, and she even began educating her classmates about the dangers of social engineering and identity theft.

She had learned that in the digital world, just as in real life, caution and protection are essential. Her story was one of strength and learning, one that she would share with everyone from then on, but in a safer and more conscious way.
